01The picture in daylight
TechRadar found that the S95H becomes bright enough to keep colour and detail alive in a well-lit room. The screen also softens reflections very effectively, so a window or lamp is less likely to sit across the programme. A brighter picture setting works better during the day than the most faithful film setting, which can look subdued when sunlight fills the room.
02Films and television at night
Dark scenes have excellent depth, bright lights stand out and fine textures remain crisp. There can be a small loss of detail in the very darkest parts of a scene, but it does not undo the overall quality. Motion normally looks natural in films and sport rather than artificially smooth.
03Games
This is a particularly strong choice for a household with several games machines. Every main connection can handle the smoothest picture available from current consoles, and the television reacts almost immediately to a button press. A powerful gaming computer can also take advantage of the extra smoothness the screen offers.
04Sound
Speech stays clear, effects appear to come from the correct part of the screen and the speakers produce more bass than many thin televisions. The sound can also spread wider than the screen. It is good for normal viewing, but a separate sound system still gives films the scale that this picture deserves.
05Design and daily use
The S95H is slim, but its new silver border is wider and more noticeable than expected. The move to two plastic feet also feels like a step backwards from the previous central stand. Connections now sit on the back of the screen, which is simpler for some people but less tidy when the television is mounted on a wall.
Price and value
The checked price for the 65-inch S95H is £2,999. Compare that exact size, because smaller models can make an offer appear much cheaper. The S95H earns a premium through its bright-room picture and gaming flexibility, but last year's flagship may be the wiser purchase when heavily reduced.
