Amazon Echo Show 8 (3rd generation)

The Most Useful Alexa Screen?

The Echo Show 8 is a capable shared screen for timers, video calls, music and smart-home controls. It is easy to live with, but Amazon's suggestions and optional subscriptions stop it feeling completely fuss-free.

The 60-second verdict

£149.99 · The Echo Show 8 makes the most sense in a kitchen or family room. Ask for a timer while your hands are busy, check a compatible doorbell, make a video call or control lights without reaching for your phone. Its 8-inch screen is large enough to be useful without taking over the room. The catch is that it needs to stay plugged in and Amazon sometimes uses the screen to promote features or content you may not want.

Our verdictThe best all-round Alexa screen for a shared room

What it gets right

  • Clear 8-inch screen is a practical size for kitchens and shared rooms
  • Voice-controlled timers, music and compatible smart-home devices are genuinely useful
  • Physical camera cover and microphone-off button provide simple privacy controls
  • Works as a Matter controller and supports common Alexa-compatible devices

The compromises

  • Amazon recommendations and promotional cards can make the home screen feel busy
  • Needs a permanent mains connection, so it is not a portable tablet
  • Some camera, music and security features depend on separate subscriptions or compatible services
Is it right for you?

Buy it—or leave it?

Buy it if…
  • You already use Alexa and want one clear control point for a shared room
  • Hands-free timers, lists, music and video calls would help your daily routine
  • You want to see a compatible video doorbell without finding your phone
Skip it if…
  • You want a portable screen that works away from a power socket
  • You strongly dislike promotional suggestions appearing on a home screen
  • Your home is already centred on Apple Home or Google Home rather than Alexa

What it is actually like

Open any section for the detail behind our verdict.

01Everyday use

Voice timers, reminders, weather, shopping lists and music are quick to reach. The adaptive screen changes what it shows depending on how close you are, which helps the screen remain readable across a room.

02Calls and cameras

The centred camera keeps video calls looking natural and its auto-framing can keep you in view. Compatible Ring and Alexa cameras can also appear on the screen, although advanced recording features may cost extra.

03Smart-home control

You can control supported lights, plugs, thermostats and cameras by voice or from the touchscreen. Its built-in smart-home support reduces the need for extra hubs with some devices, but compatibility should still be checked before buying.

What should you pay?

Price and value

Amazon regularly discounts Echo devices, so £149.99 should be treated as the standard reference price rather than an amount you must always pay. It becomes a stronger buy during a meaningful promotion.

Living with it

Who will notice the difference?

1

In the kitchen

Set several named timers, add items to a shopping list and play music without touching the screen with wet or messy hands.

2

At the front door

When paired with a supported doorbell, ask Alexa to show the camera and speak to the visitor from the screen.

3

Keeping in touch

Use the built-in camera for Alexa video calls and cover it physically when the call is finished.

Before you decide

What else should you consider?

£149.99 · Smaller smart displays cost less but are harder to use for recipes and camera views. Larger models provide more screen space but require more room. The Echo Show 8 remains the most balanced size for most households already using Alexa.
