Is It Worth Upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 in 2026?

EE now offers Wi-Fi 7 as standard on all its full-fibre plans, and router makers are pushing it hard — but UK broadband speeds tell a very different story about whether most households actually need it yet.

What Wi-Fi 7 actually adds

The headline new feature is Multi-Link Operation, which lets a single device use two Wi-Fi bands — say, 5GHz and 6GHz — at the same time, rather than locking to one. In a congested home with lots of competing devices, that can mean fewer dropouts and steadier connections. Wi-Fi 7 also supports much wider 320MHz channels, double Wi-Fi 6E's maximum, plus a denser signal encoding standard, which combine to a theoretical throughput increase of roughly 2.4 times over Wi-Fi 6.

The catch that matters most for anyone deciding whether to upgrade: those benefits only show up when both your router and your phone, laptop or other device support Wi-Fi 7. Most phones and laptops in everyday use still don't, so buying a Wi-Fi 7 router on its own often changes nothing in practice, at least for now.

What's actually available in the UK

EE became the UK's first major broadband provider to make Wi-Fi 7 standard across all its full-fibre plans, via its Smart Hub 7 Plus router, announced in December 2025 with a claimed 30% faster real-world throughput than its previous hub. Sky currently limits Wi-Fi 7 to its top multi-gig broadband tiers, with its standard Sky Hub Max still on Wi-Fi 6. Virgin Media's current Hub 5 is Wi-Fi 6 only — customers wanting Wi-Fi 7 currently need their own third-party router running in modem mode alongside it. Third-party retail routers span a wide range, from around £100 for an entry dual-band model to £800-plus for a premium mesh system.

The broadband speed reality check

This is the crux of the argument, and it comes from Ofcom's own Connected Nations 2025 report. The UK's average maximum download speed rose to 285 Mbps in 2025, but the typical (median) speed people actually get is considerably lower, in the region of 80-100 Mbps. Full-fibre connections average 218 Mbps; part-copper connections average just 47 Mbps.

Wi-Fi 6 can already comfortably saturate a standard gigabit broadband line. If your household's broadband is anywhere near the UK average — and for most people, it is — upgrading to Wi-Fi 7 while keeping the same broadband plan realistically buys you, at most, a 20-30 Mbps improvement in practice. For everyday browsing, streaming and video calls, that's not something you'd notice.

Who should actually consider it now

  • Households already on a gigabit-or-above full-fibre broadband plan, where the connection itself can use the extra headroom
  • Homes with a genuinely large number of connected smart-home devices — 20 or more — where Multi-Link Operation's stability benefit compounds
  • Competitive gamers chasing the lowest possible latency, where Wi-Fi 7's improvements are most noticeable
  • Anyone regularly transferring very large files between devices on their own home network, rather than to the internet

Everyone else

If you already have a decent Wi-Fi 6 or 6E router and a broadband plan around or below 1Gbps, the honest advice from most independent reviewers is the same: you likely don't need to upgrade yet. Device support and pricing are both expected to improve further by 2027, which is a reasonable point to revisit the decision rather than buying into the current generation early.
