The C201 is a compact black indoor camera that records in 1080p (1920 x 1080), sharp enough to recognise people and pets in a room. You can turn the view from the app: it pans 360 degrees and tilts through about 110 degrees, so one camera covers most of a room. Night vision reaches about 12 metres, and it has a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way audio. It detects motion, people and a crying baby. It plugs into the mains and connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only. The black finish is a design choice for rooms where white would stand out; it does not improve the footage.

Motion, person or baby-cry alerts bring your attention to activity, and live view lets you look closer. Two-way audio lets you speak to whoever is there. Treat an alert as a reason to check the picture, not as a reason to act.

Privacy Mode stops recording through the app. Agree with the people at home when you will use it and make the control easy to find.
Keep the running cost understandable
Recordings can go onto a microSD card in the camera, and Tapo Care cloud storage is a paid alternative. Practise finding yesterday's footage and saving a clip, which matters more than seeing a live picture.

Picture and night vision
The camera records in 1080p HD (1920 x 1080 pixels), enough detail to see who is in a room and what they are doing. For dark rooms it uses 850nm infrared LEDs, which light the room with light your eyes cannot see, reaching about 12 metres (40 feet). The black colour is a design choice and does not change the picture quality.
Moving the view
The camera turns through 340 degrees mechanically, which TP-Link describes as 360-degree pan coverage, and tilts through about 70 degrees mechanically for 110.8 degrees of tilt coverage. Because one lens moves, it can only look one way at a time, so put it where it can see the door or area you care about most.
Alerts, audio and recording
It detects motion and people, and can recognise a baby crying. A built-in microphone and speaker give two-way audio with noise cancellation. Recordings can go to a microSD card of up to 512GB, or to Tapo Care cloud storage if you subscribe. The camera connects on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so check your router can provide that band where you will put it.
Placement and power
It runs from a 9V mains adapter, so it must sit near a socket; there is no battery. Compare a couple of possible positions before installing it. A slightly more visible camera with an unobstructed view is more useful than one tucked behind a plant or ornament. A camera should be out of reach of children and pets, and its cable should not be a trip hazard.
