01Daily experience
Microsoft controls both the hardware and Windows, so the laptop feels unusually coherent for a computer. The keyboard is comfortable, wake-up is quick and video calls are handled cleanly. It is especially well suited to people who want Windows without a collection of duplicate manufacturer utilities.
02Battery and speed
The internal hardware platform prioritises efficiency. Office work, browsing and streaming are smooth, and battery life is a genuine strength. Games, complex creative plug-ins and long rendering jobs are not the target; an Intel, AMD or dedicated-graphics laptop is safer for those.
03Compatibility
Mainstream programs increasingly provide native Arm versions and Windows can translate many older applications. Translation is not perfect. Check VPN software, printers, scanners, accounting tools, music hardware and employer security software specifically rather than assuming every Windows device behaves identically.
Price and value
Around £1,199 is reasonable when 16GB memory and 512GB storage are included. Compare like for like: cheaper laptops often advertise a lower headline price with half the storage or a dimmer screen.
