Our verdict
The C8K is what happens when an outgoing TV becomes more interesting after its replacement arrives. It is a Mini LED TV: many small LEDs behind the LCD panel, grouped into zones that dim separately, so it can be very bright while keeping dark areas dark. Independent reviewers found the picture bright, punchy and unusually well controlled for the price. The 65-inch model also supports high-refresh gaming with VRR and ALLM, and has a substantial Bang & Olufsen speaker system. At £1,199 it now undercuts the newer C8L by £700. Motion handling and the cleaning-up of older or poorer-quality programmes lack Sony's polish, but the value gap is large enough to make that compromise honest rather than hidden.

Picture quality
The C8K's dense Mini LED backlight uses many small LEDs grouped into local dimming zones, which brighten bright parts of the picture while dimming dark ones. That gives strong HDR highlights, the extra brightness used by modern films, and convincing blacks for an LCD TV. Independent reviews praised its impact and dimming control. OLED stays cleaner around tiny bright objects in darkness, while TCL's processing and motion need careful settings with ordinary broadcasts.
Gaming and motion
The high-refresh screen, VRR (variable refresh rate, which stops tearing when frame rates dip), ALLM (which switches to game mode automatically) and TCL's Game Master controls suit consoles and PCs. Check the exact UK HDMI allocation before planning several sources, because regional specifications can differ and only two inputs may offer full gaming bandwidth. At this price, gaming is still a major strength.
Living with it
Google TV brings broad app support and good search, although the home screen is busy. The Bang & Olufsen audio system, a substantial built-in speaker set, reduces the urgency of buying a soundbar. As an outgoing model, warranty terms and fresh retail stock matter more than an apparent clearance saving, so check the seller and condition before you pay.
