Our verdict
The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless are Sennheiser’s noise-cancelling over-ear headphones, first sold in 2022. TechRadar gave the sound full marks and described it as “neutral, crisp, detailed”, and Expert Reviews called them “endlessly enjoyable”. Their headline feature is battery life: Sennheiser claims up to 60 hours with noise cancelling on, roughly double most rivals according to What Hi-Fi?. They support aptX Adaptive, a higher-quality Bluetooth format for compatible Android phones, and can also be used with a cable, even when the battery is flat. Reviewers agree the noise cancelling is very good but not quite the strongest, and the design is plain. Their UK RRP is £299.99, and they are often sold for less. We have not tested them ourselves: this review draws on Sennheiser’s specifications and reviews by What Hi-Fi?, TechRadar, Trusted Reviews and Expert Reviews.
Buy it if
- You travel a lot and hate charging headphones
- You prefer a natural, detailed sound to heavy bass
- You want a wired fallback for flights or a flat battery
Skip it if
- Blocking the most noise possible is your top priority
- You want headphones that fold up small
- You use an iPhone and want Find My or head-tracked spatial audio, which TechRadar notes are missing
Everyday use
Long trips and commuting
With a claimed 60 hours from one charge, most people will charge them rarely. What Hi-Fi? only needed to charge them once during testing, and a five-minute top-up gave Trusted Reviews about four hours.
Flights
The supplied 3.5mm cable and airplane adapter let you plug into seat-back entertainment, and What Hi-Fi? confirms they work wired even with no battery left.
Working from home
They can connect to a phone and laptop at once. What Hi-Fi? found calls satisfyingly clear; Trusted Reviews’ caller heard traffic as slight rumbles, so busy places may be less ideal.
The details, in plain English
Sound
Reviewers praise a clean, balanced sound. TechRadar scored it five out of five and said the bass is never “congested or muddied”. Expert Reviews praised the detail, open soundstage and dynamics, but advised against the Bass Boost setting. Trusted Reviews found the bass measured rather than punchy. What Hi-Fi? called the sound “sharp and sprightly”, though it found Sony’s WH-1000XM5 and Bowers & Wilkins’ Px7 S2e reveal a little more detail.
Noise cancelling
Sennheiser uses adaptive noise cancelling, which adjusts to your surroundings. TechRadar called it “very good indeed” and very close to Sony’s WH-1000XM5. Expert Reviews found only the strongest low rumbles got through and said Bose cancels slightly more, by a small margin. Trusted Reviews was less convinced: it found Bose and Sony rivals stronger and the cancelling strength inconsistent. Wind noise handling and transparency mode, for hearing your surroundings, were praised.
Battery and charging
Sennheiser claims up to 60 hours with noise cancelling on, measured on an iPhone at mid volume, and about two hours for a full charge. Its spec sheet says five minutes of charging gives up to four hours. Trusted Reviews took about a week of heavy use to drain them from 40% and found a five-minute charge gave about four hours. Expert Reviews quotes three to four hours from five minutes.
Comfort and design
At 293g, What Hi-Fi?, Trusted Reviews and Expert Reviews all found them comfortable, helped by a wide headband that spreads pressure. Trusted Reviews said they “slip on like a comfortable pair of slippers”. The design is the main complaint: TechRadar called it “a little plain”, and Expert Reviews found it bland. The ear cups swivel flat but do not fold, and the touch controls on the right ear cup are very sensitive.
Connections and features
They use Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive; codec availability depends on the source device, and iPhones use AAC. They can connect to two devices at once. Sennheiser’s current UK pages list Smart Control Plus support, with EQ, presets and Sound Personalization. What Hi-Fi? describes analogue listening and USB-C audio. The manufacturer lists security support through 24 July 2027; this does not mean the headphones stop working then. Current warranty terms put MOMENTUM 4 in the 12-month group and preserve purchase-date terms.
Strengths and drawbacks
What it does well
- Clean, detailed sound: TechRadar gave it five out of five
- Sennheiser claims up to 60 hours of playback with noise cancelling on
- Comfortable for hours, according to TechRadar, Trusted Reviews and Expert Reviews
- Works with a cable even when the battery is flat (What Hi-Fi?)
- aptX Adaptive for compatible Android phones, and connection to two devices at once
What to watch out for
- Bose and Sony rivals can block slightly more noise, reviewers say
- Plain design, and the ear cups only swivel flat rather than folding
- Touch controls are very sensitive and cannot be customised
- Trusted Reviews found the noise cancelling strength sometimes rose and fell
- No plug charger or USB-C-to-USB-C audio cable in the box
- The published security-support period runs to 24 July 2027
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 are the rival most reviewers measure them against: TechRadar found Sony slightly better at blocking steady low noise, while Trusted Reviews rated Sony’s call quality higher. Expert Reviews and What Hi-Fi? both say Bose cancels a little more noise, and What Hi-Fi? found Bowers & Wilkins’ Px7 S2e reveal more fine detail. What Hi-Fi? notes the 60-hour battery claim is roughly double most rivals. We have not tested these headphones side by side.
