Our verdict
The Galaxy A17 is a familiar Samsung phone for ordinary tasks. Its 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, where each pixel lights itself, gives deep blacks and rich colour, and its 90Hz refresh rate, 90 screen updates a second, makes scrolling smoother than a basic 60Hz screen. There is a 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP main camera with OIS (optical image stabilisation, which steadies the lens against hand shake), and 128GB of storage that a microSD card can expand. Samsung lists six generations of Android upgrades and six years of security updates from launch. This assessment covers Samsung's UK 4G model, SM-A175. The A17 5G is a separate version: do not assume a review, price or retailer listing for one applies to the other.

How it would fit your home
Read without crowding the screen
The 6.7-inch screen leaves room to enlarge text while still seeing a useful part of a message or web page. Try it with the text size you use; a bigger screen does not automatically make small default lettering comfortable.
Take the family photo
Use the 50MP main camera for ordinary pictures, the 5MP ultrawide when fitting everyone in matters more than detail, and the 2MP macro for close-ups.
Keep it for longer
Six years of security updates makes planning easier. The support clock starts at launch, not the day you buy, so a late discount does not restart it.

Screen
The screen measures 6.7 inches as a full rectangle (6.5 inches with its rounded corners allowed for). It is Super AMOLED, so blacks look deep and colours stand out, and its 1080 x 2340 resolution keeps text sharp. The 90Hz refresh rate makes scrolling through messages and web pages look smoother. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ covers the front to help resist scratches and drops.
Cameras
There are three rear cameras: a 50MP main camera, a 5MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro, plus a 13MP front camera. OIS, optical image stabilisation, helps with your hand moving; it cannot guarantee a sharp picture of a moving child or pet. There is no zoom lens, so digital zoom enlarges part of the image and loses detail. If moving subjects are your favourites, look for sample photos in similar lighting first.
Battery, storage and speed
The 5,000mAh battery is a large capacity for a phone, which helps it last a day of messages, maps and video calls. There is 128GB of storage, and a microSD card of up to 2TB adds room for photos. Samsung lists a 2.2GHz octa-core processor and 4GB of memory (RAM), fine for everyday apps but modest if you switch between many at once.
Check the version before the price
Confirm the model code (SM-A175 for the 4G version), network version and storage on the retailer's page. The recorded £139 price is historical; check the current retailer configuration and total before ordering. The phone has NFC for contactless payments, but no headphone jack, so wired headphones need USB-C. If you need 5G, look for the separate A17 5G rather than assuming this model supports it.
