The iPhone 16e is not simply an iPhone 16 for less money. It has a 6.1-inch OLED screen (Apple calls it Super Retina XDR), where each pixel makes its own light, so blacks look deep. Inside is the A18 chip, with a 6-core processor, so apps open quickly and it should stay fast for years. Apple rates the battery at up to 26 hours of video playback. The single rear camera is 48MP with a built-in 2x zoom. It has a USB-C socket and Face ID. Apple has left out magnetic charging, the wide-view camera and the alert area at the top of the screen. Whether it is good value depends on which of those you would miss.

Everyday use

Battery and connections

Apple rates the 16e for up to 26 hours of video playback, four hours more than the iPhone 16 in Apple's own test, and independent testing also found strong endurance. It has a USB-C socket, so it charges with the same cable as most laptops and Android phones. It also uses Apple's own C1 modem, which handles 5G and mobile signal. Anyone who wants to avoid carrying a power bank should take this seriously.
Camera
The single 48MP rear camera takes strong everyday photographs and includes a built-in 2x zoom, meaning it crops in without losing much detail. What it cannot do is capture the wide group shots, buildings and macro close-ups that a second wide-view camera allows. That is a real limit, not just a spec-sheet complaint. The front camera has autofocus, so selfies and video calls stay sharp.
What has been removed
There is no magnetic charging, so magnetic chargers and accessories will not attach as they do on other recent iPhones. Wireless charging still works with Qi chargers, but at a modest rate. Camera Control and the alert area at the top of the screen are also absent. You do get the customisable Action button. Know these differences before assuming the lower price is a simple bargain.
