Back up your phone
Make an iCloud backup and check when it last completed.
Use the pictures where shown. Follow the short instructions between them.

Open Settings
Tap the grey Settings icon.

Open Settings
Tap the grey Settings icon.
Settings is highlighted on the Home Screen.
STEP 2
Open your account
Tap your name at the top of Settings.
Zoe Taylor is an example account. Your own name should appear here.
STEP 3
Open iCloud
Tap iCloud.
The iCloud row is below the account and payment options.
STEP 4
Open iCloud Backup
Tap iCloud Backup below the Saved to iCloud section.
iCloud Backup is a separate row near the bottom of this example.
STEP 5
Turn on backup
Turn on Back Up This iPhone if it is off.
The backup switch is grey before it is turned on.
STEP 6
Check mobile-data use
If Back Up Over Mobile Data appears, leave it off when you want to use Wi-Fi only.
The example switch is on. Turn it off to avoid using your mobile allowance for backups.
STEP 7
Start your backup
Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until it finishes.
Back Up Now is the blue link below the switches.
STEP 8
Check it completed
Check that Last successful backup shows a recent date and time.
The example already shows today at 08:01. Check your own updated time; a switch alone does not prove the backup finished.

Your menus may look different after an update. Look for the same control name and take your time.
